What is decentralisation? Concepts and definitions
Decentralisation, local governance and democratisation are distinct, but interlinked concepts. Whoever deals with decentralisation will normally also be confronted with aspects of local governance and democratisation. It is among the main objectives of decentralisation to contribute to effective local governance and to democratisation. Equally whoever wants to effectively support local governance will also have to consider decentralisation and democratisation. Comprehensive democratisation also has to encompass the local level, benefits from decentralisation and has direct implications for local governance.
